Department Mission
To nurture a love for the English Language and develop effective communicators who read, write, speak and listen with understanding, accuracy and creativity.
Our English Language programmes aim to develop Southviens who:

Writing Curriculum equips students with:

Speak Up, Speak Out- See, Perceive Yield
See, Perceive, Yield teaches perspective taking using different texts. It aims to open the mind to different perspectives, deliberately see from the various perspectives, understand and evaluate them before yielding to the ones that make sense.

Speak Up, Speak Out- Debate
Teach debating skills that include the crafting of arguments and rebuttals, which foster critical thinkers and compelling speakers.

EL Oracy Competition
The EL Oracy Competition is a platform that helps to build the speaking and communication skills of Southviens. It provides an additional opportunity for students to apply the skills they have learnt in STELLAR oracy lessons and to gain confidence in public speaking and presenting before an audience. Any interested Southvien may take part in this competition.

EL SPARK
The EL SPARK programme is designed to enrich the learning for students who demonstrate passion, interest and ability in the English Language. Through activities like reading circles, drama and debate, it aims to stretch and develop creativity in higher progress, verbally talented students. It also nurtures 21st century competencies like critical and inventive thinking and communication skills.

Read@SV (Little Red Dot)
As part of our Read@SV programme to mould our students to be discerning readers and creative inquirers, P5 and P6 students will use The Straits Times Little Red Dot as a tool, along with an activity booklet, to engage deeply with the articles. It aims to develop critical thinking and foster global literacy as students gain insights into current events, global issues and multiple perspectives.

Read@SV (Storytelling Sessions)
To foster a love for reading, storytelling sessions are held every Monday morning for P1 to P3 students. During these sessions, teachers and student librarians share engaging short stories. After which, students are invited to share their thoughts and reflections on Padlet. Another storytelling session where students can immerse themselves in more captivating tales, takes place during the P1 to P3 recesses. This is hosted by our very own ‘Mrs. Flutters’ at the library.

Read@SV (Book Talks)
P4 to P5 students volunteer to present book talks to their peers during recess at the library. They can select their own stories for the sessions and those who participate are recognised with tokens of appreciation for their contributions.
